  • It’s Time to Double Up on Your Social Media Security
D2admin January 5, 2024 0 Comments

Social Media accounts are the latest victims under attack to invade your privacy and steal your identity. It’s the top of a new year and its time you protect your online activity just as much as you protect your birth certificate.

To add an extra layer of protection, you should enable two-factor authentication on all your social media accounts. Duo is our preferred choice, and we’ll show you how below.

What Is Two-Factor Authentication?

Two-factor authentication (also known as 2FA) is a security method that uses two different ways to verify your identity.

Instead of only entering a password to log in, two-factor authentication requires you to also use a code sent via text message to your phone or generated via an app. This verification helps make sure that only you can access your account.

How to Enable Two-Factor Authentication on Facebook

To enable two-factor authentication on Facebook, head over to Facebook’s Settings. Select the Security and Login tab and scroll down to Use two-factor authentication. After clicking Edit, you can choose to pick an authentication app or text message (SMS) as your security method.

Download the DUO Mobile Application from your Apple App Store or Google Play Store. If you choose to go with an authentication app, you can scan a QR code or enter a code into your authentication app to start generating your verification codes.

After choosing one security method, Facebook allows you to select additional security methods as a back-up. In addition to the default security methods, you can now use recovery codes and a security key.

How to Enable Two-Factor Authentication on X (Twitter)

For X, you need to go to your account settings to set-up two-factor authentication. On the web, click More on X’s side menu.

  • Tap on Settings and Support, followed by Settings and Privacy.
  • Tap Security and Account Access, then Security.
  • Tap Two Factor Authentication. You will now have options to turn on Text message, Authentication app, or Security key. Tap Authentication app. You will be prompted to enter your password and confirm.
  • Tap Get Started.
  • Tap Link app.
  • You will be presented with a QR code to scan from your mobile device. From the Duo app, click on the + symbol at the top right and tap Use QR Code.
  • Scan the QR Code and you’ll be set.
  • You will see a 6-digit code you will then need to enter on the X site to activate.

How to Enable Two-Factor Authentication on Instagram

From the Instagram app, go to your Profile and click the menu icon at the top-right. Press the Settings and Privacy icon then choose Account Center. Under Password and Security, scroll down and tap Two-Factor Authentication.

Tap the account you want to connect to Two-factor Authentication. Tap the option for Authentication app then tap next. Follow the prompts and connect to Duo.

Once you’ve selected a method, you’ll receive recovery codes in case your phone isn’t available.

How to Enable Two-Factor Authentication on LinkedIn (Browser)

  • On your browser, go to your LinkedIn account’s Login and security settings. Scroll down to Two-step verification and click Turn on.
  • On the LinkedIn app, tap your profile icon in the upper-left. Select Settings and press Two-step verification. Finally, select Set up.
  •

Once you’ve completed either route, you’ll be able to choose either an authenticator app or phone number (SMS). Choose one, click Continue, and enter your password to confirm. If you choose to receive your code via SMS, enter your phone number and LinkedIn password once more. Complete the process by entering your six-digit PIN.

If using an authentication app, you can either add your account to the app via a hyperlink or by entering a secret key manually. To complete the process, verify with your six-digit code. With either of the two-step verification methods enabled, you can change your verification method or generate your recovery codes.

Keep yourself safe this year. Make sure you stay in control of your personal data. Never use the same passwords for any account. Use apps like LastPass which will create and store complex passwords for you. Lastly, change your iCloud and Google passwords a few times a year. Need help assessing your current strategy?
